Last month, at our False Creek location in Vancouver, we ran our 3rd First Responder for Sports course in 2026. The course is a Canadian Red Cross First Responder Course with additional content from Sports Physiotherapy Canada covering some of the specifics of working and travelling with sports teams. I’ve been teaching this course for many years and every time I do, I have a great time. I think that’s largely because the group of sports physios, athletic therapists and sports massage therapists, sports chiros, and occasional nurses and doctors are an outgoing and keen bunch. I think the type of personality that wants to work on the sidelines or travel to major games seeks the drama and excitement that sport provides.
Last month’s crew was fantastic, and the group ranged from students to some long time practitioners who have a wealth of knowledge and experience. We divided up into three rescuer teams over the weekend and “The A-Team”, “Fire-Wire-Gas-Glass” and “The Ceiling Tiles” all had a great showing!
With the FIFA World Cup coming to our country this summer, the focus on sport is drawing more therapists into the sports specialization world.
