SPORTS PHYSIOTHERAPY

SPORTS PHYSIOTHERAPY

Our physiotherapists each have their own sporting backgrounds and areas of expertise.  And they are all here to help keep you moving and competing in the sports you love.  From pain management, to prevention, to performance!  We have therapists with focus and passions for running, biking, skiing, soccer, martial arts, golf, tennis, dance and more.

We have physios that have worked with National Teams, travelled to international competitions including the Olympic Games.  Our therapists have worked with athletes from the local level, up to National level (including Alpine Canada, Snowboard, Womens Soccer and the NHL). We currently teach on-field First Responder for Sport to Sports Physiotherapists from across the country.  This course deals with the emergency care of athletes who have suffered major trauma, as well as the daily responsibilities of a Physio travelling with a sports team.

Most Envision physiotherapists have a focus on sports, and some of our therapists have additional training and are certified as Sports Physiotherapists.  Erin Gibb is currently working with Snowboard Canada.

At Envision, we also provide Sport Concussion Baseline Testing for athletes of all ages.  To learn more about our Baseline Testing program, click here.

PHYSIOTHERAPISTS WITH A SPECIAL INTEREST IN SPORTS

Harry Toor - BScPT, Sport Phys. Dip, FCAMT, IMS

Harry is co-owner of Envision Physiotherapy and, like all Envision physiotherapists, has had extensive post graduate training. He spent three years as the therapist for the Canadian Men’s ski team, and has been a part of the medical team for the 2006 and 2010 winter Olympics. Harry’s primary methods of treatment are manual therapy, IMS and exercise. He has also incorporated the Integrated Systems Model (by Diane Lee & Linda-Joy Lee) into his practice. Through his training and experience traveling with teams, Harry has developed critical assessment and treatment skills worthy of our national and Olympic level athletes. At Envision Physiotherapy he works with clients of all ages and abilities.

Outside of his clinical time, Harry has built a free online exercise database, exer-pedia.com. He has written and illustrated a children’s book, A Robot Called Zip, teaching about some fundamentals of physical health. He is currently an instructor for Sport Physiotherapy Canada, the Canadian Red Cross, and an Adjunct Professor in the Gross Anatomy Lab at UBC for the Physiotherapy Masters Program.

Harry grew up doing taekwondo and playing squash. Now, when not in the clinic, Harry’s activities include skiing, muay thai and jiu-jitsu.

Judy Russell - BScPT, Sport Physio Dip

Judy has been a physiotherapist for close to forty years and still loves what she does. Her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Physical Education (1975) from the University of Western Ontario and her Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Toronto (1978) gave Judy the building blocks for her career. A devoted life-long learner, Judy has continued extensive post graduate training in her areas of special interest including Orthopaedics, Sports Therapy, Therapeutic Exercise, Cranio-sacral Therapy and Visceral and Neural Manipulation.

Judy received her Diploma in Sports Physiotherapy (1986). This gave her the opportunity to serve on the medical staff in four Olympic Games (Los Angeles 1984, Seoul 1988, Beijing 2008, London 2012), two Pan American Games (Indianapolis 1987, Guadalajara 2011) and the Commonwealth Games (1994). Judy served as a physiotherapist for the Canadian Women’s National Soccer Team from 2007 to 2012. In that capacity, Judy travelled to over a dozen countries for many international events. Being part of the support staff for a remarkable team that won a bronze medal at the London Olympics (2012) was indeed the pinnacle of this journey and a great privilege.

In addition to her private practice experience, Judy is a certified teacher (VMD) and certified teaching assistant in the Visceral Manipulation Program offered by the Barral Institute (www.barralinstitute.com). Judy continues her studies in this profound body of work developed by Jean-Pierre Barral, DO.

Judy was co-owner of Jericho Sports and Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Clinic (1987-2012) and has been a sole practitioner since that time. Judy is very excited to start the next venture with Envision Physiotherapy at False Creek. Judy believes the best tools a Physiotherapist has are her hands and the focus of her studies reflects this approach.

Unfortunately, due to demand, Judy is not currently taking new patients.

Erin Gibb - MScPT, BScPHPY, IMS

Erin completed a Bachelors degree in Physiology and Pharmacology and a Masters degree in Physiotherapy in her hometown at the University of Saskatchewan. She holds further certification in IMS dry needling, concussion and vestibular rehabilitation, and clinical Pilates.

Erin has an appreciation for all sports and has worked as a physiotherapist with various sports teams at both amateur and Olympic levels, including soccer, football, and snowboarding.  Erin is passionate about helping people understand their bodies and getting people back to doing the things they love. She has a special interest in ACL rehabilitation, running injuries, and working with the adolescent population. When not treating patients, you can find Erin outdoors biking, running, hiking, snowboarding, doing triathlons or travelling.
